What Is a Senior Care Advisor (and Why Do I Need One)?

Finding senior care options is hard. From recognizing when it’s time to start looking for a new home, to researching the best communities and making sure those communities meet health and safety standards, it’s just a difficult and often emotional process.

The good news is that a senior care advisor can help.

What is a Senior Care Advisor?

A senior care advisor, also known as a senior care consultant, senior living advisor, or senior advisor, is an expert in senior care arrangements. They specialize in providing access and advice to families who are considering a nursing home, an assisted living facility, or in-home care.

Not only do senior care advisors have the knowledge to help you choose the best options for you and your family, they also provide support throughout the process and can help answer any and all of your questions!

The best part of utilizing a senior care advisor is that many of their services are free (yes, free!). Typically, senior care advisors are paid by the long-term care communities that you or your family member selects.

What Does a Senior Care Advisor Do?

While the process will vary depending on your advisor, here’s how it usually works:

  1. Phone assessment and consultation – the first conversation will help us understand your family’s needs, get more information on your geographic preference and budget, and answer your questions.
  2. Make a plan – next, you and your advisor will make a plan with clear steps and goals to keep on track.
  3. Recommendations – your advisor will give recommendations that might be the best fit for your loved one.
  4. Touring Communities – once potential providers are recommended, your advisor will work with you to schedule tours, accompany you on each tour, and make sure to help answer any questions. When distance or other circumstances make it difficult for you to visit in person, an advisor can oftentimes help arrange a virtual tour.
  5. Selection and Support – Once you’ve selected a provider, your advisor will assist you with paperwork and moving arrangements and follow up to ensure that your expectations are being met.

Some advisors even provide guidance on financing for senior care, or offer other supplementary services, such as senior advocacy, and family coaching.

Why Do I Need a Senior Care Advisor?

A senior care advisor can save you time, energy, and money. Since a senior care advisor’s services are paid by the care facility where you or your family member ends up living, you have nothing to lose. Instead, having an advisor simplifies the process, provides knowledge and expertise, and gives you a trusted resource you can turn to.

Here are some reasons why you need a senior care advisor:

  • Local knowledge – advisors are experts in the local community. They have familiarity in the area and with the resources you need most, like elder law attorneys, moving services, and more.
  • Provider information – advisors spend most of their time meeting with and inspecting communities. They don’t recommend communities that don’t pass their inspections. They’re also familiar with communities in all ranges of costs, services, amenities, programs, and more. With input from you, they can make the best recommendations.
  • Relief and confidence – senior care advisors exist to help seniors and their families. They want to see you and your family succeed, no matter your unique situation.
