The topics will cover:

Dr. Seldine The Link between Hearing Loss and Dementia

Dementia causes memory loss, issues with concentration, and loss of ability to problem solve. Aging, among many other factors, contributes towards a deterioration in our senses. One of those senses is our hearing. Hearing is a bridge to our communication and socialization. Although our ears do the listening, it is our brain that interprets sound into meaningful information. Without accurate attention to the sounds around us, our awareness tends to fade and our interaction with people and our environment is affected.

Hearing loss is a chronic health concern that affects approximately half of adults over the age of 60. Also, with increases in age, the risk of cognitive decline and dementia is naturally higher. Understanding how these processes affect one another and interact is the basis of this discussion.

Dr. Seldine will focus on describing how the process of hearing works and how this integral sense influences and may be influenced by the cognitive capability of any individual.  This is a 35-minute presentation with 10 minutes of discussion which includes questions from the audience.

Tiffany Sanchez  – The Importance of Dental Hygiene and the Health of Seniors

Poor dental health has many negative effects on the body.  People aren’t necessarily aware how mental health can affect dental health or how poor dental health can add to depression, anxiety and even dementia.

Tiffany will discuss the myths surrounding the ideas that seniors need little or no dental care due to their age, the fact that they have dentures or that it isn’t important since how they look isn’t a focus.

Tiffany summarizes the issues specific to seniors, how to help seniors improve their own dental hygiene and ways caregivers of seniors can help. This is a 35-minute presentation with 10 minutes of discussion which includes questions from the audience.

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

Dr. Seldine – The Link between Hearing Loss and Dementia

  1. Explain how the human auditory system works to receive and decode sound for meaningful use
  2. Describe how hearing loss influences and is influenced by cognitive functioning
  3. Identify audiological measures of treatment and management for individuals with and without hearing loss which may help mitigate the effects of cognitive decline or potential cognitive decline
