Are You Concerned About An Older Driver

About Beyond Driving With Dignity.

The Beyond Driving with Dignity program was created in 2008 by Matt Gurwell, a retired Ohio State Trooper. Matt’s passion has always been to reduce preventable traffic crashes involving older drivers affected by diminished cognitive and/or physical abilities. Beyond Driving With Dignity is designed to save lives while helping to ease the burden on the family who is faced with this sensitive, challenging issue.

Beyond Driving with Dignity: A Facilitated Self Assessment Program for Older Drivers

A program designed to serve as a vital tool to facilitate older drivers and their families as they make decisions about the future of their loved one’s safe driving career. If an individual is a safe driver, we provide strategies on how to remain a safe driver as they age. If driving retirement is the appropriate decision, we offer possible alternatives, resources, and a specific plan to ensure a successful transition from the driver’s seat to the passenger seat.

Our Mission

The Beyond Driving with Dignity program is dedicated to improving the mortality rate of older drivers and drivers with certain disabilities. We accomplish this through our dedicated franchise owners, who work one-on-one with the older driver, and deliver proprietary educational programs to older drivers, their families, geriatric professionals, and the general public.

Our owners further enhance our service to others by forming meaningful and beneficial partnerships with members of the medical, geriatric, criminal justice and highway safety communities.

Schedule one of our public presentations

Schedule one of our Public presentations:

Adults with Aging Parent Drivers:

Among other things, this presentation discusses many of the legal, ethical, and most importantly the emotional challenges faced by a family or professional caregiver when considering a loved one’s retirement from driving. We provide a roadmap to help families address the issue with tact, compassion, and empathy so that the older driver’s dignity and independence are never unnecessarily jeopardized.

A Safe Drive Through the Aging Process

Our presentation takes a direct yet compassionate approach to the very sensitive subject of recognizing that someday it may be time to relinquish some of that treasured driving independence. The ultimate goal is not to take away driving opportunities of older drivers, but rather to offer suggestions on how to recognize and compensate for diminishing skills so that our seniors may remain on the roadways as safe drivers.

Schedule One of our Continuing Education (CEU) Presentations for Professionals:

Driving Under the Influence of Dementia:

This 1-hour Continuing Education presentation focuses on the role dementia, memory and executive functioning play on older driver safety. The presentation is supported by current-day, real-life examples as well as academic studies that confirm the correlation between cognitive decline and older driver safety.

Bringing a Peaceful Resolution to Complex and Sensitive Senior Driving Issues

This 1-hour Continuing Education presentation provides attendees with the skills and competencies necessary to help an individual (and their concerned family members) with age-related diminished driving skills make a smooth transition into a driving retirement, with minimal deterioration to the individual’s dignity or independence.

Our Purpose

Our self-assessment program provides families with the missing link between their desire to bring this issue to a peaceful resolution, and their ability to actually do so. We make this happen by providing:
