Are you concerned that a loved one may have dementia? Or is the memory loss just the aging process? I had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Eric Freitag, Psy.D., who is a licensed clinical psychologist and board certified neuropsychologist. For such a complex issue as dementia, Dr. Freitag explains everything in “layman’s terms.” Understanding the Diagnosis of Alzheimer’s and other forms of Dementia

I am considering becoming a caregiver two 6 hour days per week for a neighbor who has a partner with dementia. I have sat across the table for one hour with the “patient” – who is not being treated with medications – the woman’s closest friend and caregiver MWF, and the partner. I do not know exactly what the challenges will be if I accept this employment situation on a trial basis. I have a few months experience in an assisted living facility, previously. I did not deal with agitated behaviors, but from the one hour conversation with everyone present I learned that are certain triggers. I will have time to get to know the main caregiver, and the couple. Can you point me to any articles on your website or elsewhere that will give me some ways to cope with agitation and other dementia challenges? The woman with dementia is 70 yrs old and was diagnosed in her late 50s. She has a sweet demeanor and smiles widely, but the communication will be challenging for me to deal with. Thanks for some reading material so that I can begin to appreciate what may be some coping strategies and ways to communicate with dementia patients. Suzanne Woodard
Suzanne,
There are many books you can read to and tapes you can listen to in order to help you with caregiving. Following are some links to articles and radio shows. In addition, I will be interviewing Teepa Snow, a well-know dementia expert and consultant. You can listen to the show online at http://www.sunfmtv.com at 2pm PT on Monday, August 13th.
